Santiago Asensi founder and managing partner of Asensi Abogados was in London in February taking part in ICE2023, where the topic of the session was The Age of Europe. Santiago led the discussion which touched on Europe’s decline as a gaming region due to overregulation. He was joined by Mikel Arana, General Director of the DGOJ, the Spanish regulator, Pierre Tournier, International Director of the Betting and Gaming Council, René Jansen, Executive Chairman of the Netherlands Gambling Authority, and Maarten Haijer, Secretary General of the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA).
The discussion, which opened the second day of the World Regulatory Briefing, centred on the need to balance the duty of care that regulators have to consumers with the needs of the gaming industry to innovate and operate profitably. As ever the solution seems to lie in relationships and mutual understanding between operators and regulators which is a message that came through powerfully from Asensi and this panel of experts.
